Best Natural ingredients to make your own Hair Cosmetics : Essential oil & Vegetal powder Guide

Updated: Jun 11

You think industrial shampoo is bad for your hair ? You can't really tell the difference from a shampoo for dry or frizzy hair ?

This article will teach you how to choose the appropriate ingredients in your mixtures to find the perfect formula for your type of hair. To make it easier for you, I sorted my suggestions in 7 categories :

  • Greasy hair

  • Hair with dandruff and sensitive scalp

  • Frizzy and curly hair

  • Hair loss

  • Dry, brittle hair with split ends

  • Thin and flat hair

  • "All of us Hair"

Before I continue, I would like to emphasize a few things that are really important according to me. First, the fact that your type of hair can be modified by your alimentation, your hormones, the weather, tiredness and so on. I know this is annoying when watching youtube videos from girls with amazing hair telling you that all that matters is drinking enough water and eating clean; but this takes an important part in your hair health status.

That being said, the "All of us Hair" category applies for everyone, I just don't like using the "normal hair" expression because it's just another way for brands to create an issue with your type of hair to sell you even more products; And no one likes to be just normal, right ? Ugh! simplicity, sobriety and self-acceptance are good for you and for the planet.

Also, if you are still wondering why you should invest time on both getting knowledge and making your own hair cosmetics; let me just remind you that cosmetics brands run on a profit margin of 80% that they invest in marketing or give to shareholders. But also that most of the time you will find components that are bad fo your hair such as sulfate, silicone, alcohol and so one. Do me a favor, check your shampoo's ingredients (and no need to go down to the list), you will likely find sulphates. About that, you must ban these :

  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) (or Sodium dodecylsulfate)

  • Sodium Myreth Sulfate

  • Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate

And avoid these, even though they are not as irritating as the first ones :

  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine

  • Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate

  • Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate/ Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate

  • Sodium Coco Sulfate

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

Last but not least : plastic, plastic, plastic. Our planet and our oceans deserve all our kindness, so let's try to minimize our impact even though we can't be perfect and we should not try to be so. If you are looking for a solid shampoo DIY recipe : be my guest.

Are you ready ? Because I am.
