How to make a solid shampoo with only 3 simple ingredients

Updated: Jun 11

Easy, cheap, good for your health and for the environment. I know that sounds utopian but this is real. And trust me, no need to be a chemist to do it.

What you will need

  • SCI (Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate). 100% natural component, SCI gives an excellent skin feel with a high, stable, and creamy foam. I use this component in many of my DIY recipes such as mu solid toothpaste for instance.

  • A vegetable powder. I personally use Shikakai powder but you can adapt the recipe depending on your hair.

  • A vegetable oil. I use coconut oil but you can also use jojoba or baobab oil for instance.

If you are wondering which powder or oil you should use depending on your hair type, well it's your lucky day, I wrote an article about that. So if you're interested or just want to shine in an bobo dinner : just clic there; see you on the other side.

All these ingredients can be easily found on the internet, check out for instance. But before doing that, please check that you don't have a shop near by that will sell you everything you need without shipment and most of the time with even better quality. Especially for essential oil, it's key.

How to make it

Prepare and sterilize your equipment and workspace. In a bowl add :

  • 60 grammes of SCI

  • 10 grammes of vegetable powder

  • 20 grammes of vegetable oil

  • 10 grammes of water

Then melt the mixture in a double boiler. Mix until you reach a uniform consistency.

At that point you're almost done. Either you decide not to add essential oil and so you just divide the preparation between the molds or you can add some essential oil after removing your preparation from the heat source.

My favorite essential oils

First just be careful with essential oil, as it's very concentrated, you don't want to add more than 20 drops in your paste.

That being said, my go to a few drops of :

  • Ylang Ylang

  • Peppermint

  • Lavender

  • Lemon

  • Tea tree

This mixture suits all types of hair and treats most of hair troubles. If you want to know more about what essential oils are best for you, go check my article about it.

And that's it. Wait until it dries, it usually takes less than 24h.

Overall I calculated and it costs me less than 1 euro for one solid shampoo bar that lasts approximately one month, so go for it and share it with your friends.

Thank you & Be kind.
